Founders & History
The Frey Foundation, based in Grand Rapids, is one of Michigan's larger family foundations. Grants are provided to non-profit organizations, primarily in West and Northern Michigan, for projects to enhance child development, protect natural resources, promote the arts, and expand philanthropic and civic action. The Foundation was established in 1974 and permanently endowed in 1988 from the estate of the late Edward J. and Frances T. Frey. Mr. Frey was longtime chief executive officer of Union Bank & Trust Co. (now J.P. Morgan Chase) and founded Foremost Insurance Company. The Board of Trustees is composed of second generation members, David G. Frey, John M. Frey, Edward "Ted" Frey, Jr. and Mary Caroline "Twink" Frey, Trustee Emeritus, who have helped further refine and enhance the foundation's activities and mission over the past three decades. They were joined in 2012 by a third generation of trustees including Mary Frey Bennett, Sarah Frey Rose, Eleonora "Ellie" Frey Zagel, and William "Will" Frey. It is anticipated that Campbell "Cam" Frey and David "Tripp" Frey, Jr. will become trustees in the near future.
